You might have heard that Tai Chi is a low-impact exercise recommended by doctors for physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual benefits. But the most challenging part is actually learning it! I know from first-hand experience.

My path to learning Tai Chi started in the mid 90's for 5 straight years of study. My teacher chose to show us the traditional, "Long form" of 108 movements. 2 years in and only about 2/3rds of the way through it, he decided to switch it up and show us the, "Short form," only 24 movments which took another year.

During this time, almost all of the instruction was just watch the teacher and follow him. There wasn't any explanation of the meaning of what we were learning. It's a sad fact that this is the majority of how Tai Chi is taught: slow, repetitive and hopefully someday it clicks for you.

This method was so frustrating for me. Who has time for this?? It's not the 1600's anymore!

Since I began teaching in 2014, my goal has always been to have my students get right to the essence of what is happening in the fastest, simplest way possible, and to make sure that they leave each session with the results of feeling calm in the mind and awake in the body.

I wanted to create an online intensive program where I could not just have you "follow me," but provide live weekly feedback, coaching, answer questions, share insights and be in an uplifting community atmosphere just like you would have at a good local school.

Most importaly I want you to have a deep understanding and build enough of a habit to be able to go out in nature and practice on your own and cultivate the real mind-body magic that these arts have to offer over a lifetime.

Week 1: Play, Posture and Principles

Create a weekly, “Play Tai Chi,” schedule. Learn the mechanics of correct posture for balancing qi flow and be introduced to 8 Tai Chi principles that bring your movements to life.

Week 2: Stepping with Stability

Develop full body awareness, coordination and ambidexterity from head to toe as you learn to move in multiple directions with confidence. Leave your fear of falling behind.

Week 3: Balance Softness and Strength

Increase strength and flexibility in your muscles, joints and bones of the hips and legs, while improving internal qi and blood circulation through the organs.

Week 4: Better Breathing

Learn to positively affect the balance between the sympathetic (arousal) and parasympathetic (calming) aspects of the nervous system which boosts immune function and prevents chronic diseases.

Week 5: Feedback and Flow

Having completed the entire form, it’s now a session for continued refinement and corrections.

Week 6: Daoist Philosophy

Continued practice and discussion on how to apply concepts such as, “Acceptance, Softness Overcoming Hardness, and Going with the Flow,” into your daily life.

Week 7: Yin & Yang Theory

Exploring the duality of opposites working together, and balancing constant change.

Week 8: Refine, Review and Revel

Celebrating the fact that you now have a lifelong skill of transforming all types of stress, while cultivating health and longevity.

What exactly will I learn?

You will learn an officially recognized, Yang style Tai Chi form called, 8 Forms. It's the shortest, standardized form made up of 8 essential movements found in all of the larger forms. These movement have all of the health benefits associated with Tai Chi and provide foundational skills for learning any other Tai Chi forms.

How will I receive coaching?

The last 20-30 minutes of each class will include an opportunity to demonstrate and receive feedback. It is not required, but your willingness to do so helps others profoundly, as they see themselves in you. It also builds your confidence to be able to go out to a park and practice in public someday.

There will also be break out rooms on ZOOM where we will divide into smaller groups and everyone will have the opportunity to lead their little group and receive feedback.

It might sound scary, but it would not be if we were in person. Let's re-create a communal experience and have you really gain something to take away from this program...a holistic movement skill set and the power of human interaction and support.

What if I can't attend live?

There will be replays and more inspiration in the Facebook group and on the YouTube page. However, I would recommend really checking your schedule and trying to attend as much as possible.

I will have a separate course that is an instructional self-paced video series showing this same form. Perhaps that might be a better fit for you. The beauty of this program is showing up live once per week.

How challenging is this?

Learning Tai Chi is challenging, more so than qigong, because it is a martial art. You will learn to stand and move like a martial artist even though you'll be only practicing the art for the health benefits. But you have to be up for the challenge. If you are, I will get you there and into this global club of an estimated 300 million Tai Chi players world-wide.
