Ouch! Yeah, I said it.
Look, Tai Chi used to be shrouded in secrecy and only taught to direct desendent family members. Additionally, it was taught in a very traditional way to preserve the integrity of the artform. I get that and honor that.
But it's not the 1600's anymore!
Recommended by today's doctors as a complementary mind + body therapy, Tai Chi must be made accessable and interesting in order to reap its benefits.
I can't tell you how many times people have told me that they have tried Tai Chi before but got frustrated because the teacher wasn't explaining anything, and just making the student follow them with the promise that someday they will understand.
I too have had that experience. It's so frustrating to think about how further along I could have been. But, it has become the number one motivating factor that informs how I teach. I put myself in the student's shoes and think of what they would want to know, and explain it in a practical and fun way.
The art of Tai Chi should feel magical, not discouraging.
I wanted to create a way for beginners to jump right into the flow of Tai Chi without it feeling too instructional, yet still uphold the traditional movements and principles of the artform.
It is said that you, "Play," Tai Chi. This creates a feeling of being in the moment and adaptable to the daily changes in your body. Practice feels different than playing in an actual game. And a song is never played exactly the same way each time.
Immerse yourself in a Tai Chi adventure transforming the traditionally complex into a playful game-style experience, featuring 10 simplified flows and fun challenges that enhance coordination, strength and overall vitality.
5 Yang Style Postures - You will play with Cloud Hands, Part Horses Mane, Brush Knee Twist Step, Step Back Repulse Monkey and Grasp Bird's Tail, which are fundamental postures found in all standardized Yang style Tai Chi forms. Each posture has it's own dedicated follow-along flow with narration and soothing music, gradually increasing in levels of challenge.
2 Custom Flows - The 1st flow has you playing with spiral movements called, Silk Reeling, which is the basis of all Tai Chi shapes. The 2nd flow combines all of the Tai Chi postures into a sequence, reaffirming all that you have learned.
2 Stepping Flows - Tai Chi stepping or walking, takes your confidence and coordination to even higher levels as you understand stability, balance and leg strengthening. Included is a stepping forward and backward flow, as well as a stepping side to side flow.
Warm-Up Flows - Even the warm-up is designed not to be "instructional," just a non-stop flow. You will play a short 10 minute warm-up for when you want to then play the other flows. Or, you will play a longer warm-up that includes other loosening challenges, finishing with Tai Chi's starting movement called, Opening Form.
